At the Tufts Children's Hospital Diabetes Center, our doctors and staff work together with you and your family to manage your child’s diabetes. We know that it can be a scary thing to hear that your child has been diagnosed with diabetes, which is why we do everything we can to help you get the support and empowerment that you need.
We believe that the best care comes from a partnership between families and our physicians. That partnership allows for educational support, collaboration and increasing levels of self-management.
Typically, a child is diagnosed with diabetes by his or her Pediatrician. After this diagnosis, the child is sent to the Emergency Department, like the one at Tufts Children's, where he or she is monitored as we work to level out blood sugars and insulin.
From the moment your child steps into the ED, our expert doctors and nurse educator start giving you the information that you need to understand your child’s diagnosis and what it means for the long term. Even before we discharge your child from the hospital, we go over his or her treatment plan and schedule a follow up within the next week so that we can see how everything is going, make any necessary adjustments and help your child get on the right track for diabetes management.
Although diabetes may change your child life’s to a certain extent, the doctors at Tufts Children's in Boston work hard to help him or her find a proper balance between food, exercise and insulin. Our staff helps engrain diabetes management into your child’s everyday life so that he or she can achieve a sense of self-reliance and independence.
Our pediatric endocrinologists use their depth of experience and compassion to develop and continually modify your child’s diabetes management plan, which includes daily injections or an insulin pump, blood sugar testing, carb counting and monitoring food intake and exercise. We also work with specialists across Tufts Children's, including Ophthalmology, Neurology and Nephrology, so that we can check your child for any associated conditions.
Our goal is to help your child maintain normal growth, keep blood sugars in check and help him or her live a happy, healthy life. Our patients should be confident that they can grow up to be anything that they want to be; just think - there are Supreme Court Justices, professional athletes and actors living and succeeding with diabetes.
